The health fair was held at New Life Outreach Christian Center located on 206 Agnes Drive in Eatonton. James Kilgore Sr. serves as Pastor. Reach 2 Teach was awarded the Sow a Seed Grant in November 2021 from Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center (a division within the Mercer University School of Medicine). The purpose of the health fair was to educate citizens in Putnam County and save lives. The event addressed: COVID-19 vaccinations, blood donations, heart disease, diabetes, and prostate screenings.

In my role, I frequently hear stories about people’s connections with Alice Walker. Mostly from her cousins, and often from those who attended her 75th birthday celebration – which, dear reader, you should know I tried to get tickets for but was turned away because they were sold out. But the job perks aren’t why I’m here. It’s because I truly believe that reading and writing are fundamental to learning and growth, and that in Georgia, we are fortunate to have many writers to look to for inspiration (more than 70 in the Hall of Fame alone). For this reason, Ariel Smith’s work speaks to me.
