The sweet smell of competition is in the air for one Eatonton resident. Local cake decorator and owner of Merci Beaucoup Cakes, Reva Alexander-Hawk, will be competing in Food Network’s latest competition show, Candy Land, on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 9 p.m.
Reva began her cooking adventures at an early age when she was the “go-to baker” in her family and began developing her passion for pastry and baking when she took a class as a young Girl Scout. She went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and opened Merci Beaucoup Cakes in 2002. She later moved her business to Eatonton after her parents retired in Lake Country. Reva still likes to split her time between California and her home in Eatonton.
“I’m a California girl, but now I’m a Georgia girl,” she said.
Reva has made a name for herself within the baking competition community and has competed in several other Food Network competitions in the past. She was on the winning team on Food Network’s Halloween Wars in 2019. She was also on three seasons of “Amazing Wedding Cakes” which aired globally in over a dozen countries.
“The thing I love the most about these is actually the people you get to meet because it’s always a new adventure. You’re creating new friends and lifelong bonds,” she said. “Not everyone is guaranteed prize money, but everybody is guaranteed to go away with some new friends and that’s what I love about these shows.”
The show is to be hosted by Emmy and Tony Award-winning singer and actress, Kristin Chenoweth, and judged by celebrity chefs, Nacho Aguirre and Aarti Sequeira. Reva will be on a team with three fellow culinary artists that she has never met before.
“I think my past experiences really came into play with this because we have four members on our team and it’s all about teamwork. Having gone through other shows, working with other teammates that I didn’t know before, it’s really easy to draw upon the mistakes you might’ve made in the past coming into a new show.”
“Walking into a show like this where everything is just larger than life,” she explained. “I think all the shows that I’ve done ahead of time helped to prepare me for this.”
She says she thinks Candy Land is going to be a very different experience for viewers and says she is excited for the premiere on Sunday.
“I think that they’re going to love this show. Candy Land is something completely different and everyone’s going to need to tune in just for the set alone. The sugar creations are amazing, but the set where they’re being created in is out of this world. It’s not your typical Food Network competition. It is on the next level.”
Residents of Eatonton can watch and support Reva on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 9 p.m. on the Food Network Channel. The show spans six episodes that will air each week.
