Putnam girls win thriller to open state soccer tournament play

The Putnam County Lady War Eagles utilized fight, grit and determination to win a hard fought 1-0 victory over Cook High Thursday night at Al Reaves Field to advance to the second round of the GHSA AA girls state soccer tournament.
Tied at halftime, freshman Lily Frisch took a crossing pass from Graci Bird and drilled a laser from about 30 feet into the left side of the net for the game’s only. The tenacious Putnam defense had to bend some in the second half but never broke in holding onto the victory.
Putnam will host the winner of Dodge County and Toombs County in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 28. The time has not been determined.
 

Gatewood boys grab region track championship

The Gatewood Gators boys track team won the GISA region 4-AA track championship on Thursday at Gatewood. The Lady Gators had a good meet and finished second. The state meet will be held on April 30-May 1 in Albany. The Eatonton Messenger will have complete coverage of the region meet next week in our April 29 edition.
