Putnam steamrolls Worth to reach quarterfinals

The Putnam County boys soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the state AA soccer tournament on Friday, beating hapless Worth County 10-0. On Thursday, the Putnam girls soccer team beat Cook High in a hard fought 1-0 victory on the strength of a Lily Frisch goal with 38:13 remaining in the second half.

Both teams will be home Wednesday, April 28 for quarterfinal action against Toombs County. The girls kickoff at 5 p.m. followed by the boys game.

Gatewood track runs to state meet

Boys capture region 4-AA title

The Gatewood track team advanced to the GISA AA state track meet by virtue of the team’s performance at the 4-AA region meet on Wednesday. The Gators captured the region crown and qualified 11 tracksters for state competition while the Lady Gators qualified 8 for the state meet but not enough to qualift for team results, only individuals. The state meet will be held Friday, April 30 and May 1 in Locust Grove after a change in venue from Albany. The Eatonton Messenger will get you up-to-date in our print edition on April 29.


Putnam baseball drops final two games

Losses give War Eagles third seed

Needing two wins against Jefferson County last week to gain the top seed in region 4-AA baseball, the Putnam County War Eagles dropped both games and as a resul will be the third seed from the region in the AA state tournament. Putnam lost Friday’s game 8-4 and will travel to Worth County on Thursday, April 29 to begin postseason play.
