For a two-week span, the work of several groups of young ladies will reach a peak, for it is time to crown GHSA state champions in competition cheerleading.

Like with one-act play, this is the second time in the 2021 calendar year that the cheerleading state meet is taking place due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Champions for the 2020-21 school year were crowned at the Macon Centreplex in February. With the 2021-22 school year, the GHSA schedule is back to a normal pace with competition cheerleading in its usual November spot.

But before Macon hosts the championship routines Nov. 19-20, schools must go through the sectional rounds that take place this weekend at various locations including Putnam County High School’s Eagle’s Nest.

Not only are all Class A Public and Private qualifiers going to be determined at Putnam, so will the eight qualifiers from four AA regions. Three other AA regions, 1-3, will compete in a sectional hosted by Vidalia High School, and with eight qualifiers from there a total of 16 teams are looking for trips to Macon.

As a host, Putnam County High is looking to return to the state finals. Among the other AA contenders are Jefferson County (4-AA),

Bremen (5-AA), KIPP Atlanta (6-AA), Model (7-AA), Chattooga (7-AA), Pepperell (7-AA), Dade County (7-AA) and Coosa (7-AA).

Coach April Smith said the Putnam County War Eagles have not hit their routine yet in regular season competitions, but they are doing their very best and showing up each day to work hard and make sure everyone’s getting the job done.

The Vidalia sectional will feature the defending AA champions from Dodge County High. At the Putnam sectional, the highest placing team from February in AA is KIPP Atlanta.

Class A Private schools coming to PCHS include: Hebron Christian, The Weber School, Mt. Paran, Brookstone, Wesleyan, North Cobb Christian, Mt. Vernon, Savannah Christian, First Presbyterian Day, George Walton, Fellowship Christian and Calvary Day.

Class A Public schools coming to PCHS include: Dublin, Lake Oconee Academy, Social Circle, Bryan County, Metter, Armuchee, Johnson County, Baconton, Schley County, Gordon Lee, Commerce, ACE Charter, Trion, Irwin County, ECI, Screven County, Mt. Zion-Carroll and Atlanta Classical Academy.
