Roy Perry Dykes, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, September 26, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Roy Perry, Sr. and Corinne Tucker Dykes.
Perry grew up on a farm in Hawkinsville, Georgia, where he enjoyed riding and competing in events with his quarter horses. After graduating from Hawkinsville High School, he attended and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
He had a successful career in harness horse racing. In the off season he trained his horses in Hawkinsville and traveled to his farm in Carbondale, Illinois for Illinois races.
When Perry decided he was too old for harness racing, he went back to school and graduated cum laude from Emory University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. This career began at DeKalb General Hospital. Next, he worked at Piedmont and Emory Hospitals in Atlanta in their kidney transplant departments. He made many cherished and lifelong friends during this time.
After retiring, Perry was asked to be a partner in a cattle operation in Putnam County. He thoroughly enjoyed his relationship with Dr. Thomas Pearson and his wife, Alex, the farm owners.
Perry is survived by a loving family; his sister, Dianne and her husband, C.W. (Bip) Bulloch of Manchester, Georgia; nephews, C.W. (Bill) Bulloch and wife, Stacie, and their children, Savannah Nicole and Jesse Reese of LaGrange, Georgia; and Brad Bulloch and wife, Amy, of Dallas, Texas.
A private burial with family took place on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, with Rev. Dr. Don McClung officiating. A celebration of Perry’s life will be held at the farm in Putnam County on October 16, 2021 from 12 noon until 3:00 PM. Friends and relatives who loved Perry are invited to come and share their memories of their friendship with him.
