A 16-year-old and 19-year-old were killed in a shooting in Eatonton on Father’s Day. Authorities said Jeremiah Dessan Walton, 16, and Roman Felton Rowell, 19, were shot to death around 10 p.m. in Lawson Homes. Both teens were residents of Eatonton.

The suspected shooter, Xaviar Rashad Chambers, 19, of North Main Street in Milledgeville, was arrested around 11 p.m. and charged with two counts of malice murder, two counts aggravated assault, and criminal use of an article with altered ID mark, according to jail reports. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Chambers was out of jail on bond for another murder charge in Baldwin County.

Walton was already dead when deputies arrived at the scene, Sills said, and Rowell was taken by Putnam County EMS to Putnam General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told law enforcement officers that a man matching Chambers’ description shot the men and then went into an apartment. Chambers was refusing to come out of the apartment, so Sills said he convinced Chambers to let him in to talk with him.

The shooting was gang-related, Sills said, noting it was from gangs in Baldwin County.

Eatonton Acting Police Chief Howell Cardwell said he was not in town when the shooting happened, but arrived as quickly as possible. Cardwell thanked the sheriff’s office for their help and said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.

“Everybody is trying to work together on this,” Cardwell said. “There are so many people to interview, so the investigation is ongoing.”
