Man dies in fiery crash on wrong side of highway

A man driving on the wrong side of a divided highway caused a fiery head-on collision in which one person was killed Friday night.

Leonel Augusto Vallecillo Aguilar, 50, of Eatonton, perished when his 2010 Nissan Murano burst into flames in the two-vehicle crash, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said.

The other vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Tundra, was driven by 21-year-old Jordyn Caines, of Social Circle. She was checked out by Putnam County Emergency Medical Services personnel at the scene, but did not seek additional medical attention, Sills said. Putnam County Fire Department firefighters extinguished the fire and assisted Putnam EMS.

Sills was unable to name the victim at the time of the crash because he said he was having a difficult time locating next of kin. He said Aguilar’s driver’s license had a North Carolina address, and his vehicle was registered in Virginia. During his investigation, the sheriff learned that Aguilar was living in Putnam County. Aguilar’s sister in Texas had been notified as of The Messenger’s press time Tuesday, Sills said.
