Putnam County 4-H is celebrating a historic moment as local youth leader and Georgia 4-H State Board President Robert Thomas was invited to address the Georgia Senate and the Georgia House of Representatives Feb. 26, during Georgia 4-H Day at the Capitol, in Atlanta.
Thomas spoke before state legislators and leaders, representing more than 190,000 Georgia 4-H members statewide. During the event, he also delivered remarks at a luncheon attended by 757 registered 4-H’ers, staff, legislators, and state officials, encouraging youth to challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zones, and discover their personal “sparks” through 4-H.
Thomas also reflected on his own 4-H journey, describing how what began as a family tradition evolved into a personal passion when he discovered an interest in health and wellness. He emphasized how 4-H helps young people build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose.
“4-H gives young people the opportunity to try new things, grow through challenges, and find where they truly belong,” Thomas said during his remarks.
While at the Capitol, Thomas was also recognized by legislators and met with state leaders, including Representative Rick Jasperse and Speaker of the House Jon Burns. His presence highlighted the impact of 4-H youth leadership and the importance of investing in programs that prepare young people for future success.
“I am incredibly proud of Robert and the confidence he has developed as a leader representing Putnam County in this role,” Putnam County Extension Agent Jackie Nunn said. “Watching his growth through 4-H has been inspiring, and this opportunity reflects the dedication and character he brings to everything he does.
“Robert is the only Putnam County 4-H member to serve as Georgia 4-H state board president, and to receive this invitation, making this moment especially meaningful for our community,” she added.
