Habersham man found in Lake Sinclair

A man who was staying with friends on Lake Sinclair for the holiday was found presumably drowned Friday afternoon, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

The body of David Hoyt Glass, 34 of Mt. Airy, Georgia, was discovered by Georgia DNR officers using sonar. Divers from the Baldwin County Public Safety Department recovered the body, Sills said. The Putnam County Fire Department also assisted.

Putnam County deputies responded to a 911 call in the area shortly before daybreak, made by an elderly couple saying they could hear someone out on the lake calling for help. The deputies searched the area unsuccessfully, and began calling in reinforcements.

Authorities later learned that Glass and his friends had been out almost all night on the dock of the Lake Sinclair home where they were staying. The home was located on the east side of Putnam County on the main channel of the Oconee River just north of its confluence with Crooked Creek, Sills said. He also said that drinking was involved and most of the friends went inside the house to sleep, but Glass was one of two or three who stayed out on the dock.

The deputies found one of Glass’s friends from the dock who told them that he woke up in the water and couldn’t find Glass.

“The unfortunate death appears to be an accidental drowning and there is no indication of foul play at this point in time,” Sills said. “The investigation will continue until we hear from an autopsy by the state crime lab in Atlanta.”
