Benjamin-Smith: Family, flowers, and gospel singing

Hello, Eatonton and Putnam County. I am wandering and wondering, as usual, but this time I wandered to some different places.

I spent four days in Macon with two of my daughters. I don’t think I want to tell you about all the places we visited, but I definitely did not miss a meal. I watched loads of TV shows, mostly home and garden shows, which are my favorites.

Two weeks ago, I spent five days in Augusta with my oldest son and family. I ate, ate, ate, and watched TV all night. My family reminded me that I need to go on a crash diet, and I quickly answered that I would advertise for me to be adopted.

There are so many happenings in our town that I have trouble keeping up with all of them.

Our pastor at St. John AME Church, Reverend Wayne Griffin, retired, so we have a new pastor now, Reverend LeQuint Caswell. He is good also, and we welcome him and his family to our church.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the rain is causing my grass to grow twice as fast and as long as usual. I cut it the other day, and it feels like it grew back overnight.

I’m going to take a minute and brag on some of my flowers. My phlox, I hope I spelled it correctly (You did! – Ed.), is lavender and absolutely beautiful. Mrs. Ressau Sr. gave them to me. We were both Pink Ladies at the time. I also have dwarf yellow canna lilies, and they are blooming everywhere.

Now, I must tell you about an event that Mothers Against Crime worked very hard on. The event was the annual Gospel and Praise Concert on Saturday night at the Putnam County Middle School in its beautiful Little Theater. The event supports scholarships for high school students, and over the 34 years of Mothers Against Crime, we have awarded many, many scholarships.

There were gospel singers and bands from far and near entertaining a good crowd. They had everyone clapping and singing, swaying, and saying “Amen!” Everyone had a very good time, and I am grateful to everyone who showed up.

My thought for today: Those who do good can look at themselves in the mirror, look others in the eye, and look up to heaven in prayer without any shame.

God bless.
