Putnam ready for the biggest game of season

“We are looking forward to having a huge crowd come to support us in what might be the biggest game we have had in a few years.”

It will be the biggest game the War Eagles have played in several years.

Putnam (6-1, 3-1) travels to Monticello tomorrow night, Friday, Oct. 23, to face the rival Jasper County Hurricanes (6-1, 3-1), in a must-win game for the War Eagles to have any real chance at winning a region title.

Currently, Putnam is on top of the region standings with a 3-1 record; however, Social Circle, Jasper, and Aquanis also have just one loss in region competition. Putnam will travel to Social Circle (who defeated Jasper two weeks ago) for the final game of the season, and with favorable schedules for Jasper and Aquinas in the final two weeks, a two-loss team winning the region is highly unlikely.

Both Putnam and Jasper are coming off a bye week and had extra time to prepare. The War Eagles will once again rely on their fast, physical defense to control the Hurricanes’ offensive attack, and will look for another dominating game on the

War Eagles’ head coach Joel Harvin ground from Kumari Thomas, the region's leading rusher in yards and touchdowns (739 yds, 12 TDs).

But War Eagles head coach Joel Harvin said he needs more than just his players to show up, his players need support from the fans.

“We are looking forward to having a huge crowd come to support us in what might be the biggest game we have had in a few years,” Harvin said. “Our guys have put in the work for a couple of weeks and are ready to play.”

Putnam fans have shown support so far this year, especially on the road. Against Jefferson Co. earlier in the year, the Putnam crowd was significantly larger than the Warriors home crowd, despite the hour-and-a-half drive and three quarters of steady rainfall.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Stadium in Jasper County.
