A major point of focus during Board of Commissioners meeting on May 7 was the recent closing of the Uncle Remus Golf Course due to a lack of staff. Several of the course’s frequent fliers came to the meeting on Friday to share their concerns with the commissioners and see what was being done about it. The course closed on May 6 until further notice due to the recent resignation of the course superintendent and another employee.

In protest of the Putnam Development Authority’s decision to keep on its board Claud “Tex” McIver, who was recently indicted on charges for the murder of his wife Diane, The Gailey Law Firm resigned May 4 as the Authority’s local counsel. After 15 years of service to the PDA, Laura Rice Gailey wrote in a mass notice her conscience required her to tender her law firm’s resignation as counsel. Citing the Putnam County Board of Commissioners failed to take steps towards removing McIver after he was indicted by a grand jury for multiple felony offenses on April 27,

Workers finished putting a fresh coat of gleaming white paint on the fences at Manley Arena last week in preparation for the fifth annual Putnam County Summer Classic. This year’s classic is expected to be the biggest yet, with up to 500 riders expected to compete in the $6,000 added National Barrel Horse Association event.
50 YEARS AGO, MAY 11, 1972
A weekend camping trip turned into disaster last Saturday when two brothers attempting to save the life of a seven-year-old youth drowned in a sift undercurrent in the Putnam County part of Lake Sinclair. Robert Waldrop, 25, of Conyers and his brother, Don, 15, of Monroe, were drowned attempting to rescue Edgar Starmes of Atlanta. The boy was pulled safely from the water.

A joint meeting of the American Legion and VFW Posts Tuesday night approved plans for setting up a Veterans Committee to be incorporated for the purpose of administering Putnam’s recreation program. Douglas Cunningham, secretary of the committee comprised of Legionnaires and VFW members plus commanders and adjutants of those organizations read the report setting up the organization, and the program was approved point by point.
An unprecedented reduction in railroad round trip coach fares, effective May 15, is announced by the Central of Georgia Railway. These greatly reduced individual coach fares apply between all points on the Central of Georgia Railway in Georgia. They are made on the basis of 60 percent of double the regular one-way fare. For example, one-way fare from Eatonton to Macon is $1.21. The new round-trip coach fare will be $1.50.

The married men and the men who hope to be married met on the diamond here on Wednesday and the old boys showed the youngsters how the national game should be played. The married men scored 13 runs while the bachelors were only able to gather in eight. You could hear considerable cracking of bones as the old fellows fielded and threw the ball, but somehow they managed to get there, as the score shows. For the married men, the pitching of McBryant and the playing of Middlebrooks and McCue were the features while the playing and hitting of Alex Dickson stood out for the bachelors.
