Sitting at the dais for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic shut the world down last spring, the Eatonton City Council decided to lift restrictions on the public use of the City Waterworks building. The action came at its June 1 meeting. Council also voted to allow the use of The Hut as soon as current repairs to the bathrooms are completed. Sheetrock, flooring and plumbing work is expected to be finished by July 4.

One of Putnam County’s most beloved men has died. Former longtime Putnam County High School football, baseball and track head coach Al Reaves and former school superintendent passed away Monday morning. He was 78. “Everybody respected him in school,” said Eatonton Fire Department Chief Eugene Hubert, who played football under Reave’s leadership. “He was a heck of a man. He was a legend.” Coach Reaves, as he was affectionately known many years after he served as coach at the high school, helped guide the Putnam County High Blue Devils to a state championship in both football and baseball championships in 1967.

As of July 1, 1997, minors who try to purchase alcohol will have their driver’s licenses suspended for six months, according to a new state law signed by Governor Miller. In response, the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores (GACS), along with other retailers, has unveiled a statewide, humorous, in-store public service campaign to education the public about the new law. “The biggest fear of losing your license is being forced to get ride with your parents or revert back to your old bicycle,” said Jum Tudor, president, GACS.
50 YEARS AGO, JUNE 8, 1972
Registered voters in Eatonton and some outside the city limits will vote on Tuesday, June 13, to decide on the proposed annexation of 189.966 acres in the Witcher subdivision and Jenkins Woods area. The special election has been called under a recent act of the Georgia General Assembly. The area which is proposed for annexation is new, subdivided residential property developed over the past several years and contains, for the most part, new housing.

The Eatonton Radio Club outfit has arrived and has been placed on the second floor of the Hunt and Rainey building on Madison St. A representative of the manufacturers of the instruments came down from Atlanta Monday night and made a temporary installation in the store of the Dennis Auto Service, where the outfit has been on display for several days. Programs broadcasted by Pittsburgh and Detroit stations were heard Monday night.
