ONE YEAR AGO, JAN. 27, 2022

When the Eatonton Putnam Tourism Arts Heritage Partnership (EPTAHP) gathers in February, there will be a presentation on the proposed Hiram Little Tuskegee Airman Monument. Kevin Tomson-Hooper, chair of EPTAHP, said this project has been in planning stages for a year-and-a-half to two years.

FIVE YEARS AGO, JAN. 25, 2018

After two discussions with various residents during public hearings, the Putnam County Board of Education has taken its proposal off the table to close two schools and combine them into a newly-built single facility. The board announced approximately a month ago that it was considering closing the Putnam County middle and elementary school facilities and building a new building that would house fourth through eighth grades.

10 YEARS AGO, JAN. 24, 2013

Eatonton firefighters say they are proud they provided presents for 140 children in the Putnam County area through the 2012 Firefighter Santa project. Eatonton Assistant Fire Chief Eugene Hubert said he and his “partner in present gathering,” Kathy Yates, have come to be known as Mr. and Miss Claus to local retailers and those familiar with the fundraising project.

25 YEARS AGO, JAN. 29, 1998

Gatewood’s winning ways continued this past weekend as the third-ranked girls and the unblemished and topranked boys both swept Rutledge last Tuesday, Edmund Burke Friday in Waynesboro and defending GISA Class AA state champions Curtis Baptist Saturday in Eatonton. The boys have the extra incentive to win the Region 1AA games and the Region Tournament Feb. 16-20 at Nat Greene in order to get Coach Buster Douglas to shave his mustache for the first time in a dozen years.

50 YEARS AGO, JAN. 25, 1973

Georgia Power Company has announced that it will have to suspend or delay construction of four electric generating plants because of financial considerations. One of the four projects involved in the construction work stoppage is Wallace Dam near Eatonton. Work was curtailed in December on the 324,000-kilowatt pumped storage hydroelectric project on the Oconee River.

75 YEARS AGO, JAN. 29, 1948

The Tri-County Electric Membership Cooperation of Gray has received approval of a new loan of $50,000 from the rural electrification administration to finance construction of new lines to homes located near the existing lines, Wayne Johnson, project manager, announced today. As a result of the loan, the cooperative will be able to add 175 new consumers in the eight counties that they now are serving.

100 YEARS AGO, JAN. 26, 1923

William Hearn, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Hearn, has entered school at Georgia Military Academy, College Park, and is already making the people in those parts sit up and take notice when he strolls onto the basketball court with the GMA players. In the first game in which he participated, he shot four field goals for a total of eight points in the few minutes he was allowed to play, and the Atlanta papers were very complimentary in their comments on his playing.
