After the most successful season in more than three decades for the Gatewood baseball program, the Gators were able to bring home their first state title since 1990.
And the accolades did not stop there.
Six Gators players made the GIAA AA All-Region team for Region 2-AA, five of those players were also named to the GIAA AA All-State squad, and Gatewood senior Walker Roberts was named GIAA AA Player of The Year.
Joining Roberts on the All-Region roster were Caleb Riser, Wilson Moore, Ames Johnson, John Wallace Thompson, and Lawson Wooten, with Roberts, Riser, Johnson, Thompson and Wooten each making All-State, too.
Gatewood head baseball coach Brandon Coach Moss was proud of the effort all his guys put in to earn these end-of-season honors.
“This was such a team effort,” Moss said after the state championship final in May. “Our four starters (starting pitchers) won six, five, four, and three games between them. Our lineup stole 130 bases.
Our OBP (on-base percentage) was over .400 as a team, while we barely slugged .400 as a team. We just played baseball. And it took every single guy to get the job done.”
Johnson led the team in BA at .355, with 27 hits and two triples, while Riser led the team in OBP at .598, runs with 28, doubles with 6, and stolen bases with 28 bags on the year.
Meanwhile, Roberts’ Player of The Year campaign was headlined by a team-leading eight home runs and an unbelievable ERA of just 1.04, which also represented a team-best effort.
