After recently learning about the Convention of States Action (COSA) on IFAPray.org, I went to the website (conventionofstates.com) to get specific information to share with you. This is my summary of this nonprofit organization.
Their purpose is to stop the runaway power of the federal government, particularly in three areas: term limits, fiscal restraints, and limitations on the scope, power, and jurisdiction of the federal government.
COSA’s two-part plan is to urge and empower state legislators to call a Convention of States (COS). They explain that Article V of the U.S. Constitution requires 34 states to pass resolutions to call a Convention of States on the same subject before the meeting can be called. Secondly, this organization believes grassroots support is the key to successfully calling a Convention and ensuring that good amendments are ratified.
On Friday, Aug. 4, a simulated Convention of States congregated at Colonial Williamsburg, Va., with 104 commissioners representing every state except Rhode Island. The purpose of this simulated COS was “to experience the event of a lifetime. They will work diligently to craft, discuss, and vote on proposed amendments on three essential topics.” (Those already mentioned in this letter.)
