Letter to the Editor: No place for partisan politics in disaster response

Dear Editor,

As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, it is troubling to see the former president and many of his supporters spreading misinformation about FEMA relief for disaster-stricken areas. The Americans who rely on this aid to rebuild their lives deserve better than these falsehoods.

Equally concerning are the actions and statements of certain Georgia officials, including Mike Collins (U.S. Representative, 10th Dist.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (U.S. Representative, 14th Dist.), and Andrew Clyde (U.S. Representative, 9th Dist.), who are all currently running for reelection. Despite their votes against FEMA funding, they quickly criticized the agency’s response and demanded aid for their districts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.

Congressman Collins even appeared alongside former President Trump in Valdosta, where Trump falsely claimed that President Biden ignored phone calls from Governor Kemp. Governor Kemp later confirmed he had spoken with the president and received complete support to respond to the disaster – before eventually joining Trump at a campaign event and visiting storm-impacted areas of Georgia.

Additionally, some Republicans in Congress have circulated false claims that FEMA funds were diverted to immigration efforts – an accusation that the Republican Speaker of the House has debunked. Instead of uniting to help Americans in need, these politicians engage in political games at the expense of those who desperately need assistance.

As the disaster depleted the funds previously approved by Congress, Republican Speaker Johnson stated there was not enough time to address the issue before the election and suggested delaying additional relief funding until after the November election. These officials quickly demand action, but where is their commitment to setting aside political agendas and ensuring the necessary resources are available for those affected?

We must not forget that during the Trump administration, when Puerto Rico was struck by Hurricane Ernesto and California suffered wildfires, FEMA funding was delayed for two weeks, leaving citizens in precarious circumstances.

Why can’t all our politicians put aside their self-interest, speak the truth, and do what is right for their constituents? Now, more than ever, we must demand honesty, accountability, and decisive action from all our elected officials.
