Letter to the Editor: Honoring an Eatonton centenarian

Dear Editor,

I am writing to The Eatonton Messenger to share information about a special event at Sips Coffee Cafe, which officially opened on March 1.

The owner, Eatonton Councilwoman Janie Reid, who has coordinated Putnam County’s Women in History program for many years, is pleased to announce this year’s event scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at Sips (104 E. Marion St., Eatonton).

The event will honor the remarkable Ms. Vertie Mae Lockhart, who will be recognized posthumously.

Ms. Lockhart was a pillar of the community, having lived to be 100 years old. She would have turned 101 in March but sadly passed away just five days before her birthday. Ms. Reid expressed that she had planned to honor Ms. Lockhart before her passing and feels it is important to proceed with the event to celebrate her legacy as the 2025 Putnam County Women in History honoree.

Initially intended to be a book signing in The Conversation Room at Sips 31024, the event will now feature a Verlie Lockhart Book Sale, which is also meant to be a meaningful celebration of Ms. Lockhart’s life and impact on the community.

Her memoir, My Life, God’s Hands, is a heartfelt narrative that weaves together themes of family, community, and cherished memories of the good old days through Ms. Lockhart’s eyes.

This story is more than just a narrative; it celebrates resilience, faith, and the enduring power of hope. She revisits pivotal moments in the book, sharing vivid memories of love, challenges, and triumphs that shaped her journey.

She imparts wisdom from a century of experiences, reminding us of the strength in our roots and the beauty of embracing each season of life.

As you read her story, you may find echoes of your own experiences and be inspired by her journey. We hope to see you at Sips on March 29th to help celebrate and remember Ms. Vertie Mae Lockhart’s century of living and loving.
