Dear Editor,
Not everybody knows Eatonton has an award-winning pollinator habitat that’s free and open to the public. Also known as “The Butterfly Garden,” this volunteer-maintained resource is located at 617 Jefferson Ave., near the railroad crossing on the north side of town.
The habitat’s mission is to inform the public about the plight of pollinators in our developing environment and how we can all pitch in to help preserve this critical natural resource. It offers a patch of rustic nature, including native and non-native plants favored by many varieties of butterflies and other pollinators.
There are many places to observe nature up close to the butterfly habitat. A quarter-mile track surrounds the area for anyone interested in including a walk with their visit. A small outdoor amphitheater for groups, such as school field trips and garden clubs, also needs a meeting space.
Now is the fall season peak – a great time to visit and observe the fascinating mix of butterflies, blooms, and other pollinators – as well as to just relax for a few minutes in a beautiful natural setting. Everyone is welcome every day from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. We especially encourage teachers, families, and anyone simply interested in nature to take advantage of this incredible Eatonton resource.
Fred Parker, Eatonton
