Dear Editor,
Our democracy is hanging in the balance, and the First Amendment is the rope we’re all holding onto.
Freedom of speech is not a luxury or a privilege — it is the foundation of every other freedom we have. If we allow it to be weakened, every right that depends on it will crumble, too.
We are watching troubling signs right now: voices being silenced, opinions being censored, and dissent being punished. When those in power can decide which ideas are allowed and which are not, we no longer have a government by the people — we have a government that controls the people.
This is not just about today. The choices we make now will decide whether our children grow up free to question, challenge, and hold leaders accountable — or whether they live in fear of speaking the truth. History is clear: when freedom of speech dies, democracy follows.
We cannot afford to be silent. We must push back against any attempt to censor, intimidate, or limit the right to speak freely — no matter who it happens to. This is not about left or right. It is about right and wrong.
If we do nothing, we may wake up one day to find our voices gone and our democracy with them. Now is the time to speak out, to write, to protest peacefully, and to remind those in power that the First Amendment is not negotiable.
Our freedom depends on it.
Sincerely, Melanie Miller, Veteran White Plains
