Letter to the Editor: Lack of transparency with JDP advisory committee?

Dear Editor,

Recently, an event transpired in our community that deserves a spotlight: the meeting regarding Jimmy Davis Park. However, what should have been an open dialogue with citizens morphed into a clandestine affair, shrouded in secrecy and minimal public notice.

Picture this: a nondescript notice, lacking a date or timestamp, haphazardly pinned to a courthouse door just hours before the meeting. This was the extent of the effort made by the Putnam County Commission and administration to notify the public. When questioned, Commissioner Brown, representing the district encompassing Jimmy Davis Park, offered evasive responses, claiming that “a lot of people know” without providing any concrete details or agenda.

The secrecy surrounding this meeting raises red flags. Was there an agenda hidden from public view?

Were decisions made behind closed doors, shielded from taxpayer scrutiny? Such behavior undermines the trust between elected officials and the communities they serve.

Let’s not forget the county’s dramatic turnaround on Jimmy Davis Park. The park went from rejection and neglect to support and investment in just a year.

The hard work of some committed residents, 250 people marching to the courthouse, and scrutiny from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (the organization that oversees the federal grant the county and city received in the late 1960s to build this and other county parks) finally changed the hearts and minds of officials.

This park, once a source of contention, has the potential to once again be a beacon of community pride. Jimmy Davis Park is a public facility, so why keep the public in the dark? The lack of transparency surrounding the first two advisory committee discussions contradicts recent progress on the park.

Why the secrecy? Could it be tied to political agendas, with upcoming elections looming on the horizon? The timing seems suspect, especially considering Commissioner Brown’s reelection bid and the absence of open dialogue about the park’s recent successes.

Transparency isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the cornerstone of accountable governance. By depriving citizens of vital information, the County Commission undermines the democratic process and disrespects the taxpayers who foot the bill.

As a newcomer to this community, I was taken aback when my opinions were dismissed simply because I reside in the county and not in the city. Regardless of their address, every taxpayer deserves a voice in matters concerning public funds. The veiled secrecy surrounding Jimmy Davis Park only reinforces the importance of transparency in governance.

I implore our elected officials to embrace openness and accountability. Our community deserves better than backroom dealings and minimal public notice.

Let’s tear down the veil of secrecy and ensure that every citizen has a seat at the table.

Sincerely, Don Sadler, Eatonton
