Letter to the Editor: Letters provide positive influence

Dear Editor,

I appreciate concerned and caring citizens of our local area and in Georgia who are voicing their heartfelt thoughts through our

I have been relying for a long time on our local newspaper for information that directly affects my life. In fact, I read it thoroughly, as I do the Holy Bible.

I have mentioned the Messenger to some local pastors who admitted they don’t get our local newspaper. It is very difficult for me to understand how they can pastor their congregants if they are not reading about the many concerns that are being reported in their own backyards.

How will they know how to address the many issues that our children and grandchildren are facing in the school systems, rampant drug usage, and family violence in our community, and even more importantly, how will the pastors know how to lead in specific prayers for their flocks if they don’t engage in what is happening in Eatonton and Putnam County?

I was particularly thankful for those citizens who wrote to the Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 editions of The Eatonton Messenger. I now do not have to write a letter about why no one is addressing the war in Israel, because Mr. Dave Belton took care of that beautifully as he recognized our fallen soldiers from the United States, and Georgia specifically, to honor their sacrifice for the common good of us all. I will use his letter to remember to pray for the families and loved ones of these fallen heroes.

Related to this article was a short but significant Letter to the Editor asking why our Putnam County Courthouse and Eatonton City Hall personnel were slow to lower the flags as required to honor and mourn our dead soldiers.

I am also very appreciative of Mr. Charles Trumbo’s letter entitled, "Pay Attention to Local Elected Officials/Government."

I agreed with every word he wrote because voting in local elections is of utmost importance! Many local elections have been won or lost over just a handful of votes. So, thank you, Mr. Trumbo, I could not have written about these concerns any better than what your words expressed.

I learned something new from Mrs. Teena Garland’s letter and have already been to see her mother about getting the “LOVE” sign for my yard. I would not have known about the health issues of her grandchild if she had not written her Letter to the Editor.

And on the subject of pickleball, that suggestion on how to bring money to our town and county is already being addressed by our local leaders.

I hope my letter is an encouragement to my fellow citizens to use our local paper to voice their concerns or praises, and for more citizens in our community to subscribe to their local newspaper!

My humble opinion is that especially in the times we are living it would be advantageous for our local citizenry to be aware of both the good and the bad going on in our communities.

We can then prayerfully make positive changes as we work together.

Gail Segars Rainey, Eatonton
