Dear Editor,
Last week, while purchasing at the Marathon/ Jet Food store on Marion Street, I met Mr. Calvin Welch, the man responsible for placing dozens of small U.S. flags alongside the sidewalk before the Memorial Day ceremony at the VFW Veterans Wall.
He said no one seems to know he’s been doing this heartfelt, patriotic task for the last 19 years, ever since the building of the Veterans Wall. Mr. Welch is a citizen of Putnam County on Shadydale Road, and I think it’s time to recognize his efforts.
He is a widower whose son passed away two years ago, but he’s not had the money to honor his family, who are veterans, by buying them bricks in the wall.
Let’s honor this humble and patriotic man by donating to the VFW in his name to purchase these bricks.
