Letter to the Editor: Presidential pride in Putnam and Plains

Dear Editor,

The arts connect people in the community, and through the Trailblazers program at Putnam County Elementary School, they also help connect the academic disciplines of science, math, and reading.

Six years ago, Greg Brickell started this program that gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn in academic subjects to hands-on creations that benefit their community.

Using wood and other materials donated by local businesses, their creations have included cornhole boards, birdhouses, a pergola for the Butterflies and bloom pollinator habitat, and even picnic tables for Jimmy Carter’s home in Plains.

What a thrill it must have been for these grade-school kids to actually meet President and Mrs. Carter! And what a thrill to know they created a way for the president to be tangibly connected to the Briar Patch community.

Just one more great reason to be Putnam Proud!
