To the Editor and people of Putnam County, Giving Tuesday for this year is Nov. 28, a globally focused day meant to reimagine a world based on shared humanity and generosity.
Locally, could we suggest your readers consider making a charitable contribution to The Plaza Arts Center, where every cent of #GivingTuesday donations will go directly toward our Broadway Intensive program?
The Broadway intensive is a collaboration in which about 20 high-school and college-age students, young adults, and young working adults gather together to learn, build the set for, get costumes made, and perfect, a professional-level production in just two weeks. It’s truly amazing what these young people are capable of.
However, the program is not free to produce. Last year, meals, sets, and costumes represented some of the biggest expenses for this program. The Plaza feeds the participants to make sure everyone has something to eat. During an extremely busy two weeks, The Plaza buys set-building materials to make sure the stage is set for the performance. And of course, costumes are required to allow the production to take place.
Your Giving Tuesday donations can ensure this impactful, intensive can continue to take place. Meals for the entire two weeks for every participant cost about $3,500 total; costumes cost nearly $3,000; and set expenses last year reached more than $2,000.
Broken down further, approximately $150 was spent on meals for each actor, the costuming cast about $125 each, and set-building expenses broken down per actor were approximately $100 each, Any other amount collected will go to the general funds for the Broadway Intensive.
