The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a great movie for the whole family. With stunning visuals and a dose of nostalgia, the movie transports young and old to the world first established by Super Mario Bros. in 1985.
The movie is set in Brooklyn as Italian-American brothers Mario and Luigi make their debut in the plumbing business. From the beginning of the movie, the brothers face criticism from their father and their former ex-employer, Spike, for their decision to change jobs.
Spike, known in the games as Foreman Spike, is a character from the 1998 game Wrecking Crew. His inclusion in the story refers back to the game in which Mario and Luigi work at his demolition site.
From this small reference to many more, veteran fans of the Mario franchise can sit on the edge of their seats in expectation of the “easter eggs” (game language for references or hidden in-game features) that may appear throughout the story. Still, these same older fans may also be shocked – or appreciative – to see Princess Peach stepping out of her traditional role as a damsel in distress to the leader of the rebellion against Bowser.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie does an excellent job of balancing the old “lore” of Mario and building upon these characters to present good role models to the younger generation.
From fearless leader and kind-hearted Peach to scared-but-reliable Luigi, kids have their fair share of role models to relate to and love in the story.
Youth may also relate to the key song of the movie, “Peaches,” which has become a popular meme on the Internet.
The short ballad is sung by Jack Black, who plays Bowser, as he relates why he loves Peach and wishes to marry her.
Despite his villainous plans of ruling the world, the turtle can’t help but yearn for the princess’s affections.
Thoroughly comedic, with decent storytelling and eye-catching visuals, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has something that all fans of the series, young and old, can enjoy.
On a score of 10, for me, the movie sits at a solid seven.
