Dawgs prepare for familiar challenge against Crimson Tide

The Georgia Bulldogs had another successful week at home Oct. 3, defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores 38-14 and marking their fifth straight win by 20 or more points this season.

One month into the season, UGA prepares to hit the road Oct. 10 to face the also-undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide.

The 7:30 P.M. game is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated matchups in the Southeastern Conference for Week 6, as the two teams have faced off six times in the last five years.

The Dawgs won the most recent meeting with a 28-7 victory in the 2025 SEC Championship, but have not beaten the Tide in a regular-season game since 2007.

The Crimson Tide is on a 24-game home winning streak, last losing at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2023, when they fell 34-24 to the Texas Longhorns.

UGA head coach Kirby Smart shared his thoughts on the upcoming road game, noting the familiar opponent is an “extremely physical football team.” Smart said he first watched the Tide in recent days and sees the matchup as a “big challenge” for his players this week.

“They’re playing really high-level football right now, and I’m super impressed with both sides of the ball and special teams,” Smart said. “It’ll be a great challenge for us to go into a really tough environment to play, and our players will be looking forward to it.”

Alabama’s offense will operate under sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell, who has 1,414 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and two interceptions so far this season.

Smart described Russell as a talented quarterback and believes he continues to improve each week.

“Their quarterback [Russell] is playing amazing for them. The guy is really talented and fun to watch,” Smart said. “You’ve seen the growth just from the first game all the way through.

The talent this guy has is pretty incredible, and they’ve got a really good scheme around him.”

On the defensive side, Alabama leads the conference with eight interceptions, four of which were returned for touchdowns. Smart believes the Tide has several “ballhawks” in the lineup.

“They’ve got guys that make plays on the ball, and a lot of length in the secondary, and they play physical,” Smart said.

“Their front brings on a lot of that because they create pressure situations and stop the run.

“They’ve been really opportunistic as well when they’ve gotten them, running them back and scoring. Anytime you score on defense, it’s a huge momentum swing, and they’ve got players that can do it.”

Overall, Smart said for the Dawgs’ offense to play efficiently on Saturday night, they must “be dangerous” and “have multiple weapons.”

He noted that he sees senior quarterback Gunner Stockton doing a “tremendous job” in the current season, but needs to make some improvements for the team to reach their goal this season.

“I think to be a good offense nowadays, you’ve got to be dangerous and have to have multiple ways to get those players the ball,” Smart said.

“I’m certainly pleased with where Gunner is as a player, and I think how people play around you matters. He played a really, really good game the other day, and I’m really happy for him because of how hard he works at it.”
