Five War Eagles compete in FCA All-Star game

Putnam County had five players compete Dec. 20 at Clarke Central in the Athens Area FCA All-Star football game.

The War Eagles had offensive lineman Johnny Bishop, linebackers Branan Griffin and Christian Farley, defensive lineman Steven Grandt, and defensive back Bill Waters playing for the FCA East team.

It marked a special moment for all five Putnam County players, who spent the last few weeks driving to Madison County for practice. They suited up one more time and played their last high school game together.

“It was really a blessing to be able to suit up with some of my favorite teammates and even more of a blessing to have that Putnam County logo on my head,” Bishop told The Eatonton Messenger after the game.

Putnam County head coach Joel Harvin also attended and said he was proud of each of the five seniors.

“It was great to get another opportunity to see our seniors play,” he said. “This was great for them to see how they line up against some of the other seniors as well. I thought all five did a good job and represented our school well.”

The contest also included players from Athens Christian, Franklin County, Madison County, Cedar Shoals, Athens Academy, Oglethorpe County, Hart County, Clarke Central, Oconee County, Social Circle, Loganville, Walnut Grove, Winder Barrow, Monroe Area, Apalachee, Bethlehem Christian, and Jasper County.

The game’s purpose was to lead area coaches and players closer to Jesus Christ, which Griffin appreciated.

“It was an awesome experience,” Griffin said. “Not only lacing the cleats up one more time for our county but also for The Lord. And getting to spend that week with my guys was awesome.

“We made some great memories while doing something we all love. The entire FCA organization and community does a great job building athletes’ relationships with The Lord. I know we are blessed to be able to compete for what they stand for.”
