Gatewood went 2-1 last week, with a loss at home to Piedmont Academy sandwiched between two wins over Trinity Christian.
The Gators began the week with a 9-6 home win over Trinity Christian on March 11. They got 12 hits off the Crusaders’ pitching staff, while theirs only allowed four.
However, Gatewood’s defense made three errors that contributed to Trinity Christian’s run production.
In the first inning, Trinity Christian took an early 1-0 lead, but the Gators came back and tied the game in the bottom of the first. They extended their lead to 3-1 behind two runs in the home half of the second and again scored two more in the bottom of the third. The home team held Trinity scoreless until a late-game rally.
Trinity Christian put together a four-run seventh inning after going scoreless for three consecutive frames but came up short.
Meanwhile, Gatewood’s offense compiled 12 hits, eight RBIs, four doubles, and one home run by Jayden Moss, who is tied with Lawson Moore for a team-best this year. Overall, the Gators have hit eight long balls so far in 2025.
Gatewood pitchers Walker Roberts, John Wallace Thompson, Moore, and Jackson Love allowed four hits, six runs, two earned runs, and five walks. They also struck out eight batters in the 9-6 win.
On March 13, Piedmont Academy snapped Gatewood’s three-game winning streak with a 7-5 win in Eatonton. The Cougars led the entire game after taking an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Gators got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, then added another in the sixth before scoring three more runs in the seventh to finish the game.
Following the disappointing loss to Piedmont Academy, Gatewood rebounded on March 14 with a 7-1 win over Trinity Christian. The win gave the Gators a season sweep of the Crusaders and improved their record to 8-4.
Drew Love and Brady Haley had multi-hit games for Gatewood, while Roberts was dominant on the mound in Dublin. He pitched all seven innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits. Roberts also struck out 10 batters with zero walks.
Gatewood continued region play this week by traveling to Macon on Tuesday (past press time) to face the Central Fellowship Christian Academy (0-9).
A two-game home stand begins Thursday at 6 p.m. against Tatnall Square Academy, followed by the Gators’ final matchup against CFCA at 6 p.m. Friday in Eatonton.
