Gatewood hosted its third track and field meet of the season last week, with the Gators and Lady Gators finishing second to Brentwood Academy.
The War Eagles won the boys’ meet with 179 points, while the Lady War Eagles placed first in the girls’ meet with 150 points.
In the girls’ track events, junior Presley Moss was the Lady Gators’ lone first-place finisher with a win in the 400-meter dash and second-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Lily Piper placed second in the 800-meter race, and eighth-grader took second in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the Gatewood team of Moss, Delaney Ball, Natalie Sills, and Piper placed third. Sills, Moss, Piper, and Katelyn Hall also placed second in the 4x400 meter relay.
In field events for girls, Gatewood junior Ellie McMillian won the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 5.75 inches and placed second in discus with a throw of 86 feet, 2 inches.
Riley Roberts took the long jump win at 15 feet, 0.5 inches and also won the triple jump at 32 feet, 1.25 inches, while Rocker won in pole vault after clearing 6 feet and finished fifth in the high jump.
Jackson Hewatt scored the only individual track win for Gatewood boys with a 23.50-second time in the 200-meter dash, with fellow senior Lawrey Benner third at just .28 seconds behind.
Junior Ben Brannen was second over 100 meters, as was Jackson Lundy in 400 meters with Jack Wooten close behind in third.
Sophomore Cale Ferguson placed second for the Gators over 800 meters and finished third over 1600 meters, with senior John Van de Planque second in both 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
The Gators 4X100 relay team of Benner, Bodie Curry, Crofton Smith, and Tanner Johnson finished fifth. At the same time, Wooten, Kaden Keiser, Lundy, and Ferguson combined to win the 4X400 meter final, as did Wooten, Wyatt Wojtas, Keiser, Ferguson in the 800-meter final, with Colt Jenkins, Luke Martin, Smith, and Rocker second.
In the boys’ field events, senior Blake Daniel won the shot put at 39 feet, 7.25 inches, followed by junior Mason Sinclair at 38 feet, 9.75 inches.
Daniel and junior Jake Carnes combined for third- and fourth-place in discus, respectively, and Gatewood freshman Jack Davis cleared 8.5 feet to win the pole vault event.
Ferguson was the team’s top finisher at sixth in high jump, and Tanner Johnson led the Gators in long jump and triple jump with eighth-place results in each.
Gatewood will host several more meets before the regular season ends.
The Gators will then host the GIAA Region 4-AA meet on April 19 against Augusta Prep, Brentwood, Briarwood, Edmund Burke, John Hancock, Monsignor Donovan, and Thomas Jefferson.
