After a 4-1 start to the 2025 season, the Gatewood softball team has struggled. The Lady Gators sit at 6-5 overall and 0-2 in region play after Tuesday’s loss to Athens Christian.
During the last week of August, Gatewood lost to Johnson County 8-5 but defeated Windsor Academy 13-4. The Lady Gators then defeated Central Fellowship Christian before losing three straight contests to Briarwood Academy, Brentwood Academy, and Athens Christian. They scored only one run in those three losses.
“The girls have not seen the same success in the batter’s box that they saw earlier in the season, so we’ve struggled putting runs on the board for the past few games,” Gatewood softball head coach Dena Stancil said.
Gatewood’s offense averaged nearly 11 runs over its first eight games.
The Lady Gators will rely on players like Lily Arthur, McKenna Riser, Natalie Sills, and Ellie McMillian to step up. Others, including Riley Roberts, Alexis Thrift, and Avery Hill, also need to spark the offense.
Stancil hopes production at the plate can return as region play heats up over the next few weeks.
“They still show a lot of promise for the remaining region games,” Gatewood’s head coach said. “We’ve got all of the ingredients for a championship team. We just have to start putting it all together again.”
The Lady Gators played at Brentwood on Wednesday, after press time, and will host Thomas Jefferson Academy on Thursday. They travel to Milledgeville to face GMC Prep on Saturday, and next week host Edmund Burke Academy on Monday before visiting Thomson to face Briarwood again on Tuesday.
