Lake Oconee FCA holds 2nd annual golf tourney

The Lake Oconee Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) area chapter hosted its second-annual golf tournament on May 13 at The Oconee Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro.

FCA Area Director Jason McBay and his staff organized the event to raise money for the local chapter and send several area teams to the FCA camp later this summer.

“All the funds raised through our community sponsors and area golf tournament go toward our ministry resource fund and camp scholarships,” McBay said. “With the success of this year’s tournament, we will help seven local teams attend a summer FCA Camp.”

The event was a success, with a record number of more than 100 participants. Entrants were treated to breakfast from Chick-fil-A before hearing a few words from Gatewood graduate and PGA professional golfer Blake Adams about the importance of FCA.

Participants then hit the course and played a full 18 holes of golf for a good cause.

The winning team, consisting of Pat Ehren, David Scherer, Scott Randolph, and Brian Quinn, combined to shoot 20 under par. However, the big winner of the day was Jeremy Britt, who sunk a hole-in-one on No. 13 from 179 yards out to win a Mastercraft boat donated by Skier’s Marine.

The golf tournament helped raise money to send teams from several area schools across various sports to camp. Those schools include Greene County High School, Jasper County High School, Lake Oconee Academy, Morgan County High School, and Putnam County High School.

Lake Oconee Area FCA Advisory Board Chairman Steve Jones said hosting events such as the tournament is important because it unites supporters and staff in coming together for a good cause.

“This is our second annual event doing this, and it’s just exciting to see the people who are coming out to support us and see how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is doing,” Jones said. “There are so many things it’s going to help support. Buying Bibles, sending kids to camps, and doing many other things. We’re just really excited and thankful for all of our participants and sponsors.”

McBay and Jones’ mission is to make this an annual event that continues, which they accomplished, and to grow each year. They look forward to seeing how this event will impact local athletes’ lives in the future.
