The last regular-season home game for Putnam County High School’s soccer teams came on March 28, and not only celebrated 2023 seniors but also college signings.
PCHS soccer for both boys and girls has been dominant over the past several weeks and last Tuesday the celebration continued.
Prior to the Lady Eagles match, parents and athletes were recognized and after each match came the hanging of the jerseys.
A new tradition also emerged at Al Reeves Field behind Putnam County Middle School, with the college signing of three senior players – Edwith Lopez, Marco Owenby and Brad Reeves – to Thomas University in Thomasville. These young men played together for several years on PC squads, along with honing their skills on a travel team. They will be joining former War Eagle Diego Sanchez at Thomas University.
The celebrations did not take the players’ focus from the task at hand, though, which was playing against the Greene County Tigers. Both the boys and girls handed the Tigers convincing losses earlier in the season and were looking to do the same again.
The Lady Eagles took to the field first, led by top scorer Lily Frisch. They capped off the 2023 home schedule with an 8-0 victory.
The boys then took over and to no one’s real surprise handed Greene County a 10-0 loss, which included eight first-half goals, to keep the War Eagles undefeated this season. Players on both teams enjoyed the evening, but just two days later it was back to business for the regular-season closer.
Even with the number-one spot in region play clinched for both teams, the Putnam teams packed their bags and headed to Social Circle, where both were determined to end their regular seasons on a winning note.
The girls were up first against a young, but very strong Social Circle team (10-5). The Redskins proved to be more than the Lady Eagles could overcome and handed them a 6-0 loss, their third on the season. The Putnam girls finished as region champs with an 11-3-1 total record and 8-0 in 2A-Region 4 play.
The boys were up next and had a tough time with the Redskins as well, scoring only once in the opening half, but adding three goals in the second to remain undefeated with a 4-0 victory.
Over a 15-game regular season, the War Eagles outscored their opponents by an accumulative 120-4 and finished with a 13-0-2 record, going 8-0 in 2A-Region 4.
Putnam County will host the first round of region playoffs and the second if advancing. Opponents were not known at press time since some opposing teams will not finish the regular season until the first week of April.
The opening round of the girls’ tournament will begin April 13, while the boys will start April 14, with all games played at Al Reeves Field.
