Three up, three down for Gators

Gatewood baseball went undefeated last week, beginning with a decisive 12-3 road win at Westfield.

Last Thursday, the Gators followed with an impressive 3-1 win at home in Eatonton over top-ranked First Presbyterian Day. The Gators finished their week by taking down Monroe Area 12-1 in Monroe.

At Westfield in Perry, the Gators scored four runs in the opening inning and eight runs in the sixth, as their bats dominated the Hornets’ pitching.

Gatewood’s victory over FPD represented only the second loss of the season for the Vikings. The Gators and Vikings held each other scoreless through three-and-a-half innings until Gatewood broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth, plating a pair of runs on a home run from Jayden Moss.

The Vikings responded with a run in the top half of the fifth, but that’s all FPD could muster against a phenomenal night on the mound for Gatewood pitchers. The Vikings out-hit the Gators, but Moss’s dinger proved to be the deciding factor.

Pitchers Walker Roberts and Wilson Moore combined for 13 strikeouts and nine walks for the Gators, with the lone Viking run coming on a solo home run in the fourth.

Gatewood scored early against Monroe Area, running up a 12-0 lead by the end of the third inning. The Purple Hurricanes got their lone run in the fourth inning before a scoreless fifth ended the game.

With those three victories, Gatewood improved its record to 6-3 and looks to extend its winning streak this week.

The Gators hosted Trinity Christian on Tuesday (past press time). They will also play Piedmont Academy at home on Thursday and then visit Trinity Christian on Saturday.
