War Eagles roll past Vidalia, punch ticket to Elite Eight

The No. 3 seed Putnam County boys soccer team found its rhythm at the right time last week against Vidalia.

Behind a fast-starting offense and a balanced scoring effort, the War Eagles rolled past the No. 19 seed Indians with a 4-1 victory on April 29 in the second round of the GHSA Class A Division I state playoffs, punching its ticket to the Elite Eight.

After a stretch of matches where goals were harder to come by, head coach Michael Taylor said the explosive first half was a direct result of the work his team put in behind the scenes.

“Absolutely,” Taylor said. “I think the guys really stepped up, not just in the game, but in practice. We put in a few more things to create more scoring opportunities, and they worked hard on it and carried that into the game. Once they started to see the results, they just continued to feed off of it.”

That early momentum set the tone, as Putnam County attacked with confidence and purpose. The War Eagles led 3-0 at the end of the first half, thanks to a strong effort.

Overall, four different players found the back of the net — Edwin Garcia, Jared Arreola on a penalty kick, Jonathan Acostas, and Alex Jimenez — highlighting the depth and unselfishness of the squad.

For Taylor, that kind of production speaks volumes about his team’s mentality.

“That tells me that they’re all hustling and that they’re all focused on what they have to do,” he said. “It also shows we’re not going to rely on just one or two players. Any one of them can have a big night for us.”

The win carried added significance for Putnam County, marking the second straight season the team has eliminated Vidalia from the postseason. But unlike last year’s overtime battle on the road, this time the War Eagles took control early and never let up.

“We were preparing like it was going to be a dogfight just like last year,” Taylor said. “I think the guys really wanted it more this year. They know they have something special, and they want to keep it going.”

With the victory, Putnam County advances to the Elite Eight, where it will face Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy on Tuesday, past press time, with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

Taylor said preparation for the matchup has centered around handling an aggressive opponent that looks to create opportunities with pressure.

“They play aggressive up top and really try to press hard to create mistakes,” he said. “I think our defense is very good and can move the ball around. Once it gets to our center mid, I’m hoping we can control it, deflate some of that pressure, and either wear them out or get them to back down.”
