Former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan said, 'Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.' With this in mind, Eatonton-Putnam County Library is offering its annual Summer Reading Program.
'If people don't read, they can lose the information that they learned in the previous years,' said Abby Boatfield, manager of the Eatonton-Putnam County Library. 'The more the children read, the more literacy skills they build. It's really important for families to read with their children. Our theme this year is All Together Now so we want everyone to come together and find the love of reading.'
Those interested in participating in the reading program should come to the library and fill out a form to register. Then, every participant gets a reading log to write down the names of all the books that they read, which may not be necessarily from the library.
They turn the completed logs in. Completing more than one log is welcomed. Children get prizes for every completed log. At the end of the program, participants have a chance to win a grand prize.
As part of the Summer Reading Program, the library also offers biweekly shows for children. Two of them – by magician Keith Karnok and storyteller Josie Bailey – have taken place in June.
Two more shows are coming in July – The Picadilly Puppets on July 14 and Rock Eagle Environmental Education on July 21, both at 2 p.m.
'It's never too late to sign up for summer reading,' Boatfield said.
Attending the shows is not mandatory to participate in the program. The reading program is not for kids only. People of any age can sign up.
'We want everyone in the family to sign up and to be reading this summer,' Boatfield said.
