The First Presbyterian Church on South Main Street in Greensboro presented its 3rd annual production of “Christmas, Bah Humbug No More!” Dec. 14, to an appreciative congregation.
T’was a night of ghosts and second chances, featuring a cast of characters dressed in period-correct, Victorian-era costumes to bring Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, to life. The story features Ebenezer Scrooge being visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past (the ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley), Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come.
Narrated by FPC pastor Rev. Meg Jackson Clark, the cast featured Spencer Hinds as Scrooge, Alex Stevens as Scrooge’s assistant Bob Cratchit, Steve Cross as Marley’s Ghost, Jan Brazier as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Steve Stewart as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Patty Edmonds as the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, with Verley Dotson, Joan Stevens, and Gail Kavanaugh as Londoners.
Arriving at the church, with candles lighting the way despite wind and extreme cold, parishioners were welcomed by carolers Jocelyn Clark, Gail Kavanaugh, Joan Stevens, and Meg Jackson Clark. The trio later sang inside the church as well.
Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, telling the story of a bitter, miserly man, Scrooge, who hates Christmas until being convinced by the trio of visiting ghosts of the joy of Christmas, but an awful future for Scrooge if he doesn’t change his mean, miserly ways. They lead him to reconsider his life and actions and become a generous, kind man who embraces the spirit of Christmas by helping friends and his community.
First Presbyterian Church will host its annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 24. Worship at FPC starts at 11 a.m. each Sunday.
