OPAS presents arts education programs to local students

The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) continues its commitment to arts education by bringing world-class artists to local students through engaging masterclasses and live performances.

OPAS recently presented several educational events to enrich the musical experiences of more than 700 students in Putnam and Greene counties.

Renowned jazz trumpeter and conductor Byron Stripling led an inspiring masterclass on March 20 at Greene County High School, sharing his expertise and passion for music with aspiring young musicians.

On March 25-26, celebrated Broadway soprano Lisa Vroman conducted masterclasses at Lake Oconee Academy and Putnam County High School, offering students invaluable vocal coaching and insights into the performing arts industry.

Additionally, OPAS presented “Americana Women,” a tribute to the importance of women songwriters in American music, at Rock Eagle’s Talmadge Auditorium, followed by a Q and A and masterclass with the musicians, allowing students to learn directly from seasoned professionals.

OPAS thanks Tony Kalka and Christine, and Mark St. Clare for sponsoring Americana Women. OPAS also expressed appreciation for the support of Ellen and Jeff Lemming, Tim Green, Sue and Steven Cross, Mike and Donna O’Neal, and Jo and Ron Foster for helping to make making the masterclasses happen for local students.

The organization thanks all of its supporters, specifically including Bo Fears, Kathy and Steve Whitcomb, and Laura and Jeffrey Shulman, for their sponsorship of the OPAS Performing Arts Scholarships.

OPAS is currently accepting applications for its college performing arts scholarship, with an April 30 submission deadline. Interested students can apply at opas.org/ performing-arts-scholarship.

Looking ahead, OPAS is excited about presenting Rhapsody in Blue, celebrating George Gershwin’s iconic masterpiece, on April 25 at Festival Hall in Greensboro. Two acclaimed veterans of “Porgy and Bess” will join the evening, as well as legendary trombonist Wycliffe Gordon.

On Saturday, May 14, OPAS presents the show, “Billy Joel, Elton John, and More,” starring celebrated pianist/singer Michael Cavanaugh. Bring a picnic and any beverage desired to enjoy this family-friendly, annual Memorial Day Weekend event at The Farm at Oconee. Children 10 and under are complimentary.
