PAPA presents ‘Play On!’ at The Plaza

Last Thursday, audiences at The Plaza Arts Center in Eatonton were treated to a lively and thoroughly entertaining production of “Play On!” by Rick Abbot, presented by the Plaza Alliance for the Performing Arts (PAPA).

Under the direction of Brent Mero and Dennis McClain, the show delivered exactly what it promised: a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud farce that celebrates the chaos and charm of community theatre.

Structured as a “playwithin- a-play,” the script features a determined but increasingly frazzled theatre troupe trying to stage a hopelessly flawed murder mystery.

Beyond making their own continuing mistakes in dialogue and action, the cast must deal with an error-prone prop mistress and a flighty playwright who keeps revising the script mid-rehearsal.

What unfolds is a comedic spiral of missed cues, forgotten lines, technical mishaps, and mounting frustration.

“Play On!” cleverly builds its humor across three acts. The first introduces a painfully awkward rehearsal, where it quickly becomes clear that the script, the cast, and the production are in trouble. The second act depicts a chaotic dress rehearsal featuring everything from sound effects to missed cues to stage timing going off course.

Act 3, of course, presents the finished product to the audience, which by now knows the ebb and flow of the action and dialogue almost as well as the actors. And of course, the wheels come completely off, resulting in a perfectly orchestrated storm of theatrical disaster where, true to form, anything that can go wrong, does.

What made this particular staging stand out was its sharp timing and clear sense of fun. The directors and actors alike leaned into the absurdity without losing the heart of the story, allowing each character’s quirks to shine through while maintaining the rapid pace the script demands.

The cast of mostly well-known Lake Country thespians embraced the physical comedy and escalated the madness with confidence, turning every mishap into a well-earned laugh.

Beyond the humor, “Play On!” provides a loving tribute to small-town actors and the spirit of local theatre. Anyone who has spent time onstage or even backstage will recognize the personalities, the challenges, and the sheer determination it takes to bring a production to life, regardless of the chaos that may surround it.

PAPA’s production proved that even when everything falls apart onstage, the result can be pure comedic gold.

Good tickets remain available for “Play On!” at The Plaza this weekend, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., plus a 3 p.m. final presentation on Sunday. All tickets are $28 (includes handling fee) and available online through The Plaza at app.arts-people.com/index.php?ticketing=plaza.
