On June 3, the Clover Room at Rock Eagle hosted the Putnam County High School (PCHS) class of 1961’s reunion, with 13 of 17 surviving members of the original 39 graduates attending.
Attendee Ward Parr said the class tries to meet every two years, but with COVID preempting their plans in 2021 this reunion made everyone especially thankful to reunite with old friends once again.
“This year was a very special year in that we celebrated our high school graduation 61 years ago,” Parr said. “We might be telling our age, but you are only as old as you feel, and we felt young once again! Laughter will do that!”
A highlight of the event was a photo slideshow assembled by ’61 grad Dallas Turk featuring images of various hangout spots, old acquaintances, unique characters and legends of Eatonton in the 1950s and early 1960s. Also included were photos of some of the graduates’ teachers, sparking more memories and stories being shared.
“Truly, our generation was blessed to be raised and educated in the era in which we were,” Parr said. “Our ethics and strong moral beliefs, which have guided us throughout adulthood, were formed right here in rural Georgia with wonderful like-minded peers.”
The next Class of ’61 reunion is scheduled for May 31, 2024, again at the Rock Eagle Dining Hall.
