PCMS showcases live talent for Board of Education

Putnam County Middle School students showcased current clubs and programs Monday night for the Putnam County Board of Education.

The school’s hallway leading to the library hosted an assortment of art and a robotics demonstration. Students welcomed guests at the door and offered a short tour through this section before leading attendees and the board to their seats in the library.

The showcase began with Assistant Principal Victoria Bivins's short debriefing on a new program, “Coffee and Conversations.”

This program provides a monthly opportunity for parents, guardians, and family members to visit PCMS and discuss a range of topics. The first event had about eight attendees and focused on dress code, phone policy, and school safety. Next month’s conversation will be about test scores.

The robotics department then gave a short report on the Technology Student Association conference that they attended. The PCMS Technology Student Association president stated that the organization's goal is to create leaders in a technical world and promote careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

About 40 PCMS students are in the school’s Technology Student Association, most of whom aspire to roles in STEM fields. As part of the association, they learn to code and work with robotics and other programs, which they incorporate into other areas of their schoolwork.

PCMS broadcasting teacher Bill Rakosnik showcased a running segment, “Q & A with Faculty,” the in-school broadcast show produced by his class. For this demonstration, two students recorded the segment, which involved three faculty members being interviewed by two student anchors live in front of an audience. The interview focused on new curricula in each subject.

James Bollen of the PCMS Junior Beta Club also spoke about his experiences at the National and state beta competitions. He has been a two-time top-10 finisher at nationals.

The showcase ended with two presentations from the Drama and Chorus programs. Kenzie Nelson, who will play Wednesday in The Addams Family show, sang Pulled, followed by chorus teacher Ontario Williams, leading his students to sing a slow piece and a gospel song for the board.
