The sound of pickleball paddles and laughter filled the air Nov. 6 when the Putnam Pickleball Group (PPG) hosted its 2nd annual Volley for Veterans Pickleball Tournament, pre-celebrating Veterans Day with a full day of fun, community spirit, and heartfelt gratitude.
Held at the Putnam County Recreation Department (PCRD) pickleball courts, the event drew players, volunteers, and supporters from across the area — all to honor local veterans and raise funds for a meaningful cause.
PCRD Director Scott Haley appeared thrilled with the turnout and shared his excitement for the future. He noted the recently passed TSPLOST should allow the county to build a new pickleball facility with dedicated courts — a welcome development for what has become a popular Lake Country activity.
With friendly competition on the courts and patriotic pride all around, participants enjoyed games, food, and fellowship. With red-whiteand- blue decorations lining the courts, players battled in good spirit while members of VFW Post 6686 cooked chili and hotdogs for the crowd.
Local businesses donated more than 50 items for the event’s raffles and prizes, too.
“In this community, you don’t have to look far for generosity,” said Bonnie Kallenberg, auxiliary chair for the event. “When people hear it’s for veterans, they graciously give.”
This year’s Volley for Veterans event also introduced the “Honor Wall,” where attendees could place ribbons in tribute to veterans meaningful to them, listing names, branches of service, and personal notes of thanks. The display was beautifully crafted by PPG member Kerry Parker, and the Girl Scouts of Troop 60516 carefully cut more than 300 ribbons for the activity, which was a highlight of the day.
Special thanks go to Kelley Chitwood, who runs the tournament, gathers volunteers, coordinates players, and keeps everything running smoothly. Deep thanks also go to the teamwork of VFW Auxiliary Post 6686, and the many PPG members, players, and donors who made everything possible.
