Several months ago, Putnam Christian Outreach in Eatonton received an electric guitar to share with a deserving student as an Angel Tree Christmas gift.
Since PCO Executive Director Rex Corlett knows little about guitars, he reached out to volunteer Robin Benton, who in turn contacted John Cotten, music minister with Milledgeville First Methodist Church, after retiring earlier this year from Eatonton First Baptist Church.
Cotten identified the guitar as a Fender Squier Stratocaster, a solid-body electric guitar in excellent condition. All it needed was new strings, a little clean up and maintenance, an amp, and a few accessories to become a complete guitar outfit.
Cotten handled the maintenance, and soon found the needed items. Meanwhile, he reached out to Putnam and Baldwin County musicians and educators in hopes of finding the right student to match with this generous gift.
Robyn Meeks, music teacher at Baldwin High School, identified BHS senior Kyle Camilla, who was already learning to play guitar. Upon learning of the gift, Kyle was most humbled, grateful, and excited to receive a complete electric guitar outfit.
Cotten recently met with Kyle, Meeks, and Baldwin students for the official presentation, explaining who it was from and how it came about.
Following the presentation, Kyle played a song for his friends. Cotten demonstrated more of the guitar’s capabilities, playing song snippets in various styles, then “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
Putnam Christian Outreach has served the Lake Country for decades, uniting churches, businesses, and volunteers through its mission statement: “Sharing God’s love by empowering our community through compassionate care.”
Corlett emphasized that PCO is more than a food pantry. In addition to food programs, PCO offers medical and utility assistance, and provides clothing and shelter to neighbors in emergencies. PCO also offers spiritual guidance, community gatherings for support, and a well-stocked thrift store featuring gently used clothing, furniture, toys, books, and electronics.
Donations and volunteers are always welcome at the store (151 Industrial Blvd., Eatonton), which is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
