The 10th annual Seuss on the Loose Celebration and Fun Run is coming up March 2nd at Putnam County Primary School (PCPS, 162 Old Glenwood Springs Rd., Eatonton), sponsored by Ferst Readers of Putnam County.
If your family hasn’t pre-registered for the Fun Run, time is running short. Forms are available at all schools and daycares in Putnam County and at the Putnam County Public Library (309 N. Madison Ave., Eatonton). Last week’s edition of also had a sign-up form in its sports section. Please complete the registration form and drop it off at any school or at the library by Feb. 16 to be guaranteed an event t-shirt in the correct size.
The registration table for runners to sign in and last-minute entries for the Seuss on the Loose Fun Run opens at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. race start. Please note, that runners who register that morning may not be able to get their desired t-shirt size, so pre-registering is encouraged. Prizes also will be awarded in various age groups.
The inside fun begins at 10 a.m. in the school cafeteria, with activities featuring all the favorite Dr. Seuss characters.
Local businesses and other community organizations provide a variety of activities including the money machine, face painting, musical instruments for children to play, and Seuss-themed crafts and games. Additionally, there will be a firetruck parked outside, attended by a fireman to show it off, as well as plenty of Seuss characters in costume, with kids encouraged to come wearing their costumes, too.
Tickets per inside activity are 50 cents each, or for $10 a wristband allowing participation in everything can be purchased.
Local primary and elementary school children are currently hard at work on art projects for the annual Seuss on the Loose multi-media art contest sponsored by Eatonton Service League. Their artworks will be displayed at the library before being moved to the PCPS cafeteria for the big event.
Ferst Readers uses all proceeds from Seuss on the Loose to provide a free book monthly to each registered child in the county, from birth to age 5. These books are new, bookstore-quality, and age-appropriate for each recipient, representing a great way to start a child on the road to successful reading. All children in Putnam County daycare facilities, preschool, and Head Start programs are automatically enrolled.
During Seuss on the Loose, volunteers at a table throughout the event also will register younger Putnam County children to receive the books.
Children can be registered by visiting online at ferstreaders.org, where donations also are accepted year-round, with just $42 enough to sponsor one child for a full year. Alternatively, donations may be completed by sending a check to Ferst Readers, P.O. Box 4283, Eatonton, Ga., 31024.
