A house fire that destroyed a home in Eatonton on Sunday morning is under investigation, officials say.
Eatonton Fire Department was called out to the 400 block of East Marion Street about 1:30 a.m. April 13, Eatonton Fire Chief Jamey Williamson said.
One end of the single-wide mobile home was fully engulfed in flames and already burned when they arrived, he said.
No one was home at the time of the fire. Williamson said the woman who lived there, Rena Adams, was at her daughter’s house elsewhere in Eatonton.
“So, thankfully, there were no injuries,” Williamson added. “She was living in it, she just wasn’t home.”
Williamson described the home as “basically an old singlewide that’s been remodeled and looks pretty nice.”
He said it was apparent that the fire had started on the left end of the home, but because that end was completely burned away, he couldn't determine what caused the fire.
“So, I called the state fire marshal not long after I got on scene,” he said. “And after we put the fire out, we stayed there until the fire marshal came.
“He did some preliminary investigation and took some evidence,” Williamson added. “And he took it back to their lab so their people could look at it a little closer. So, we’re not really sure what caused the fire, and that’s why it’s still under investigation.”
Firefighters with the Eatonton Fire Department and the Putnam County Fire Department responded to the initial call and quickly extinguished the fire without incident or injuries.
