Authorities said businesses on Godfrey Road were evacuated, and the road closed last week due to a bomb threat.
The Marble Works manufacturing site, formerly owned by GroTech, was the site of the threat, according to Eatonton Police Department reports. The Marble Works plant manager called the police after he received text messages and a phone call making the threat.
In his report, EPD Officer Christian Waldroup said the phone call was made from a restricted number. The caller did not identify himself but referenced the text messages and then hung up.
When EPD officers arrived, the manager had already evacuated the building. Police Chief Howell Cardwell had his officers evacuate the surrounding businesses and county buildings as well, including the Petro gas station, the UGA Cooperative Extension/ 4-H offices, and the Eatonton-Putnam Water Sewer Authority offices. Cardwell said the 600 block of Godfrey Road was also closed.
He called in Putnam County Sheriff’s K-9 handler Deputy Hollie Collins, K-9 Kora, and a Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 officer to search the building and grounds for a bomb, but they found nothing.
“So, I released the buildings back to the managers, and the investigation is ongoing,” Cardwell said.
Cardwell emphasized that he was grateful to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and GDC for their assistance with the incident. Anyone with information on the bomb threat should call EPD at 706-485-3551 and ask to speak to Chief Cardwell.
