And then there were two.
The race to fill the seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Jody Hice – who ran an unsuccessful bid against Brad Raffensberger for the GOP nomination for Secretary of State – opened with 13 candidates.
In the eight-way race for the Republican nomination for U.S. House District 10, Mike Collins and Trump-backed Vernon Jones were the top two vote-getters.
In the five-way race for the Democratic nomination, Tabitha Johnson-Green and Jessica Allison Fore came out on top.
Tuesday’s runoff finally narrowed the field to two candidates – Collins and Johnson-Green.
With 94 percent of precincts reporting, Collins is the clear winner with 74.6 percent of the vote. He earned 29,672 votes to Jones’s 10,083.
Johnson-Green won with 8,355 votes, which comes to 63.48 percent. Fore earned 4,806 votes.
Putnam County voters made the same choices. Collins won 67 percent of the Republican votes, while Johnson-Green earned 64.2 percent of the Democratic tally.
No local races appeared on the runoff ballot, which likely accounts for the low voter turnout of 11.5 percent.
As of press time Tuesday night, the following candidates were nominated by their parties. Putnam County and statewide voters made the same choices:
Charlie Bailey defeated Kwanza Hall for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. He will face Republican Burt Jones in the November General Election.
Bee Nguyen prevailed over Dee Dawkins-Haigler for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State. She will face Raffensperger.
Janice Laws Robinson was chosen by Democrats for Commissioner of Insurance. She will face the incumbent, Republican John King.
William “Will” Boddie Jr. will represent Democrats in the race for Commissioner of Labor. He will face Republican Bruce Thompson.
The voter registration deadline ahead of the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 11. To check your voter status, go to mvp.sos.ga.gov.
