The grounds of Eatonton First United Methodist Church (EFUMC, 103 W. Magnolia St.) were swarming with superheroes, Disney characters, and many other Halloween-costume-clad characters Oct. 22, when the Youth Activities Department of the church hosted its Community Fall Festival.
More than 130 youngsters enjoyed trunkor- treating among 10 vehicles, including a City of Eatonton fire truck and police vehicle, while playing numerous games, including old-fashioned favorites like Go Fish and Spider in the Hay, plus a cakewalk and a hot dog supper.
The first-time event was planned and hosted by the Youth Activities Department of the church under Youth Director Joe DeLoach, who was assisted by Teal Sanders, Duncan Williams and several adult volunteers.
“We have a robust youth program here at EFUMC and we welcome all children to participate,” DeLoach said. “The program is structured around needs of youth in today’s world. Our junior program includes children from kindergarten through 5th grade and our senior program is open to students from 6th grade through senior high.”
DeLoach added that participating kids also are encouraged to serve as both Scripture readers and acolytes in church services.
EFUMC youth program volunteer Duncan Williams said the activities are appropriately adapted to each participant’s age and include Bible study, songs, service projects such as packing Christmas Child shoe boxes, Easter baskets for Lake Country foster children, games, and for older participants, off-site activities such as ice skating. A snack supper is also provided.
Currently, involved youth are preparing a musical event to be shared with the church family. Other upcoming plans include Christmas caroling, a youth and church family movie night, and perhaps a community Easter egg hunt next spring.
The EFUMC youth program meets most Sunday evenings, 5-6:30 p.m. in the Bauman annex on Madison Avenue.
