Eatonton police investigate shooting

Authorities are searching for the person responsible for a shooting in Eatonton recently.

Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell said a local man, approximately 24 years old, was shot but is recovering well.

Eatonton Police Department’s Sgt. Eli James responded to a call regarding shots fired in the area of South Jenkins Street around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15. Officers Christian Waldrop and Dillan Waldrop assisted, according to Cardwell.

The victim was standing in the roadway when they arrived; he had been shot once in the upper arm. He was taken by Putnam County EMS ambulance to a hospital in Macon.

“If he knew who did it, he is not telling,” Cardwell said. “There also were several witnesses who saw the shooting, but nobody can identify the shooter.”

The victim reportedly said he had been sitting in his car parked on the side of the road when another vehicle pulled up behind him, a man got out of that vehicle, walked by the victim’s car, and shot him. Another vehicle that was parked nearby also was hit by a bullet, but no one else was reportedly injured.

Cardwell said the investigating officers found eight shell casings at the scene, all from a 9 mm handgun. The police chief said they have not discovered a motive for the shooting.

“But there had just been a party at the Jimmy Davis park that night and several people had been arguing at the party. But we don’t know if that’s what the shooting was about,” he added.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Eatonton Police Department, 706-485-3551.
